Transforming labour practices and human rights commitment in Malaysia
We are helping Malaysian palm oil company (FGV / Felda) in their social and labour transformation, with a shared vision to mainstream these critical aspects of sustainability into their business operations and supply chain.
As the world’s largest CPO producer and third world largest palm oil operator, FGV and Felda hire nearly 23,000 foreign workers from various countries of origin.
This partnership provided an opportunity for us to transform the Groups’ commitment in improving their foreign workers’ treatment as well as the potential spill over impacts to the industry in Malaysia as a whole. Throughout this partnership, we had the opportunity to visit four of FGV / Felda plantation sites and various consultations internally in order to explore potential and practical solutions.
Moving forwards, TFT provided a set of corrective actions on sites and action plan for FGV / Felda to consider. The action plan was inspired by the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, with greater emphasis given to strengthening institution and leadership across the Groups as well as inclusive transformation.
Among progressive actions and pledges committed by FGV / Felda (as of April 2017) were:-
- Signing of MoU with Malaysia’s Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) to better promote and respect human rights of their workers
- Commitment to return all direct foreign workers’ passports in stages
- Commitment to ensure all foreign workers receive minimum wage immediately
- Strengthening cross-entity organisational structure to mainstream human rights commitment across FGV, Felda & FTP.
- Organising a series of capacity building programmes and roadshows to raise awareness on labour issues and the Groups’ commitment on human rights to contractors, suppliers and settlers.
